Become a Friend of the Charterhouse

Last year the Friends scheme raised just over £29,000 which has contributed towards the costs of the alms house and has enabled the creation of the new Thackeray Rooms.

Dedicated to the ex-Carthusian and 19th century writer William Makepeace Thackeray, the new rooms house a reference library of our entire collection of his works, including over 470 books, letters and a small but significant collection of his drawings. The new facility has provided a means for the collection to be easily accessed by scholars and other enthusiasts.

In 2017 we intend for the money raised from the scheme to continue to support the alms house and the upkeep of our estate and collections including some planned conservation work on our collection of 17th century paintings.

The funds also enable us to react if a particular issue arises including emergency repairs to the fabric of the buildings on the historic site.
