Restoration of the Tomb of Thomas Sutton Founder
The magnificent early seventeenth century tomb in which the founder of Charterhouse was finally laid to rest on 12 December 1614 - three years after he died on the same day - has been restored beautifully by Susan Lee and Nigel Leaney, conservators from Lincoln. The project was supervised by Dr Donald Buttress, church architect and a Governor of Sutton’s Hospital, sometime Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey.
The tomb was constructed in a specially created aisle of the Chapel of Sutton’s Hospital, to the north of the main aisle, by Edmund Kinsman, Nicholas Stone and Nicholas Johnson. The recumbent effigy of Thomas Sutton, 1532-1611, lies behind the railings made by William Shawe in 1615.

Launch of Charterhouse Art and The Oil Paintings of Charterhouse

Charterhouse Art is a catalogue of all the paintings, prints, watercolours and photographs which adorn the walls of Sutton’s Hospital, over 500 of them! They tell the history of a remarkable institution and it is excellent that they are now collected together with notes about the artists and presented as they are arranged in the various spaces of Charterhouse.

The Oil Paintings of Charterhouse is an extract of Charterhouse Art which itemises the thirty-five oil paintings – some from the 17th Century and others more recent.

About eighty invited guests attended the launch at which Stanley Underhill gave a presentation describing the project with illustrations of some of the exhibits. Afterwards, Mr William Shand, former Governor of Charterhouse and Chairman of the Heritage Sub-Committee, proposed a vote of thanks.
