Coronavirus: Closing the Charterhouse to the public

As coronavirus diagnoses continue to increase around the world, the Governors and staff are committed to providing a safe environment for our Brothers and staff, following Public Health England guidance.

The average age of our residents, the Brothers, is 79, some of whom receive specialist care in our registered care facility and are particularly vulnerable to coronavirus. Our first duty is to protect and safeguard their health and wellbeing. We are pleased to report that no cases of the virus have been identified amongst Brothers or infirmary residents.

We would like to try and ensure business continuity at the same time as taking appropriate measures to minimise the risk to the Brothers’ health. Our website will be updated regularly with the latest information as we respond to changing circumstances.

From Tuesday 17th March we closed to the public, cancelled existing event and tour bookings, and put in place a series of rigorous protocols for anyone leaving or entering the building

As of Monday 23rd March the following steps have been taken:

  • We have now requested that Brothers stay within the Charterhouse site. All their meals and essential supplies are provided and the gardens offer the perfect environment for gentle exercise.
  • Arrangements have been made to ensure Brothers can keep at a safe distance from each other – for example spacing seating out in the dining room
  • All but essential staff are now working from home
  • Maintenance, kitchen staff and care staff are working to ensure the health, wellbeing and safety of the Brothers in these difficult circumstances.
  • A team of Brothers and staff is being very proactive in creating a programme of activities and diversions in order to keep spirits up, and ensure everyone who can has some exercise and fresh air in the Charterhouse gardens.
  • Charterhouse Square remains open – with extended hours – to ensure local people can use it for exercise

Please see below details of the precautions regarding site visitors being taken across all areas of the Charterhouse. This has meant cancelling all our usual events, tours, school programmes and meetings.

We apologise unreservedly for this inconvenience and for the disappointment it may cause. However, the care and well-being of the Brothers remains our paramount concern.

Thank you for your patience and understanding at this time and we hope to welcome you to the Charterhouse very soon.

SITE VISITORS

FAMILIES & FRIENDS
We regret that at the present time family and friends of the Brothers are not able to visit.

VOLUNTEERS
All our volunteers, who support our museum staff, or infirmary staff are no longer coming onto the site.

PRIVATE EVENT BOOKING
All existing private venue hire and film shoot bookings have been cancelled.

There is currently no specific date as to when we are likely to resume our venue hire services but will be pleased to discuss provisional future dates.

If you have any enquiries or would like to discuss the implications for your booking further, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via events@thecharterhouse.org.

MUSEUM, TOURS & PUBLIC EVENTS
We wish to minimise the risk to the Brothers’ health and are taking steps to reduce the overall number of visitors to the Charterhouse and further restrict access to some areas of the site. We therefore took the decision to close the museum, cancel all tours and events and suspend bookings from 17th March.

There is currently no specific date as to when we are likely to reopen and resume our tours and events programme. Once we are able to reopen the site to the public, we will reopen bookings and reschedule all pre-booked visits.

If you have booked a visit, you will be contacted by the museum team with further information on how to rebook for a future date.

  • We will reschedule all tours as soon as we are able to reopen.
  • The museum team will be in touch to help you rebook when we have a timescale for reopening.
  • If you are not able to reschedule your visit then you will be eligible for a refund.

We would ask if you would consider donating your fee for the current booking towards the charity and helping carrying on our work through this period when our charity income will be seriously reduced. We would like to thank all those who have already offered to do this.
